How pool plumbing works, in plain terms
Your pool has two sides. The suction side pulls water from the skimmers and main drain to the pump. The pressure side pushes it from the pump through the filter, heater and salt cell, then back to the pool through the return jets.
That split is useful when something goes wrong. Problems on the suction side usually let air in, so you see bubbles and weak flow. Problems on the pressure side usually push water out, so you see drips, wet ground or a dropping water level.

Why is there air in my pool pump basket?
Air in the basket usually means air is getting in on the suction side, before the pump. Common causes are a low water level, a worn pump lid o-ring, a loose fitting or valve on the suction line, or a cracked suction pipe. Check the water level and lid first.
What does a three-way or diverter valve do?
It directs water between different lines, such as skimmer and main drain, or pool and spa. When the internal seal wears or the handle or actuator fails, water can go to the wrong place or leak past the valve. Many pros rebuild or replace these valves.
Is a leak at the equipment pad a plumbing problem or an equipment problem?
